Established in 1983, with the present winery building finished in 1988, Chamard Vineyards was among the most beautiful and traditional of New England wineries. The 40-acre property boasted 20 acres of established vines that benefit from being only two miles north of, and influenced by the moderating temperatures of, Long Island Sound. The vines were carefully tended by hand in the European tradition, yielding superior Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir fruit. Sold in 2006 to a new owner, the vineyard is "in transition," with its vines not being harvested. Warm-weather entertainment programs and farmers' markets have been added to the calendar to support the property. Chamard Vineyards is deep in the country, but only a short drive from Guilford, Mystic, Mystic Seaport, Stonington (and Stonington Vineyards), as well as other destinations along the eastern reaches of the Connecticut shoreline, such as the casinos of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Other vineyards nearby, also worthy of a stop, include Stonington Vineyards and Jonathan Edwards Winery.
