Priam Vineyards is among the more recently founded of Connecticut's wineries, having started in 1998, producing its first wines from its 22 acres of vines in 2003. In its first two years of production, Priam won 24 international wine competition medals for its wines, which are made from both European vinifera grapes and French-American hybrids: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cayuga, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Muscat, Riesling, Seyval and St Croix. Responsible, sustainable environmental practices are important here, where insecticides are eschewed in favor of encouraging natural defenses against pests. Bring a picnic to enjoy with your wine on Friday, Saturday or Sunday from March through December. You can buy local cheeses at the winery. The casinos of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are nearby, and it's only a short drive to the other attractions of the southeastern Connecticut shoreline, including Guilford, Mystic, Mystic Seaport and Stonington. Other wineries in the region include Chamard Vineyards, Stonington Vineyards and Jonathan Edwards Winery (map). Priam Vineyards
