If you visit Ipswich on the Massachusetts North Shore, and particularly if you go to famous Crane Beach, you must stop at Russell Orchards for their fruit wines, hard ciders and perrys (pear wines), not to mention their home-made fruit preserves, cider doughnuts, pies and other farm goodies. A historic family-owned farm since 1920, Russell Orchards started its winery in 1988, making hard cider: Dry, Sweet, and Slightly Sweet. In subsequent years they added Sparkling Cider, Perry (pear "cider") and Cider/Perry. The list now extends through Baldwin Apple, Dry Blueberry, Dandelion, Peach, Pear, Raspberry, Raspberry-Peach, Red Currant, Rhubarb, Strawberry, and Strawberry-Rhubarb— 24 fruit wine and hard cider varietals in all. The farm store, which offers wine tastings most days, sells all sorts of fine farm-fresh food products. At the proper season, many of their fruits are available as pick-your-own.
