Wine from a mountaintop in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom? Yes, and surprisingly good, too.

Grand View Winery in East Calais VT is aptly named: the view from the Green Mountain hilltop winery is grandly, lushly, greenly panoramic. Very Vermont.

A mountaintop in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is not the favored place to grow grapes, so Grand View Winery imports the raw materials for its grape wines from vineyards in more equable climates.

However, Grand View's excellent tree fruit and bush fruit wines—apple, pear, blueberry, blackberry, cranberry, elderberry, black currant, even strawberry rhubarb—are made mostly from homegrown or neighborhood ingredients.

Best of all, Grand View Winery's tasting room is open all year, and free tastings are the rule.

Try their Strawberry-Rhubarb wine—quite different, and quite popular. You might even want to have it at a dinner featuring Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie.

If you're like me, you try five or six of these tasty wines and cart home three or four bottles.
